Reading a recent National Geographic article about the early
polar expeditions and found an interesting quote. "In Norway there is
very little tolerance for failure in expeditions," one historian says.
"You go and you come back whole." The British, in contrast emphasized
the struggle, believing that character, not skill, would win out and
that death was heroic - a view that would be judged irresponsible
