The Third Annual Whitewater Photography Competition presented by Adventure Technology. Thanks to Gareth
Tate and Adventure Technology who will
award a paddle of choice to the champion.
Immersion Research
also has some love for the competition with a pair of Tangerine
Guide Shorts and Supafly
Zinger Shorts.
Comments are a little different this round. Clay Wright is commenting on each as a set, while I'll go image by image. Bracket 1 This is easily my favorite of the round. There is a lot to like here,
the horizon and dark chasm of the unknown. The paddlers active
stroke and body position add to the tension, and then on top of it all
the texture on the rock is fantastic. The only downside is the amount
of white in the foreground. It would be an unusual crop, but maybe this
image calls for a panoramic crop?
&This image has a nice flow through it, water coming towards you then
moving to the right. The timing is just a fraction of a second late,
I'd like to see an aggressive boof stroke being planted, while this
looks a little relaxed/casual. Thankfully the paddlers downstream focus
pulls it together, you can tell that it's not all over here, which
gives it that critical sense of drama.
Clay on all four: Clearly the first shot is sicko with all that rock color and patterns and Dinosaur with Toby good too. F is OK but blown out both. Darin on all four: C has two images that are both great yet have a different look and feel.. Both in F have back light and a similar feel, it's a shame to have the arms blocking the face as it takes away a critical level of connection you might otherwise get. Darin: There is a lot to like about this photograph, a nice boof stroke with a high sense of drama about what may happen downstream. Unfortunately it's quite hindered by bad light and the paddlers arm blocking their face. & Darin: The back light and shallow depth of field are working for me here, I really like this image, but again the paddlers arm blocking their face is a massive detraction to the ascetic feel and connection you'd otherwise make to the paddler. C advances. Bracket 2
Darin: I love a love hate affair with this photo. I absolutely love the place and the composition. The light, high levels of saturation and most of all, the paddler is just in an awkward position. You can tell he is nailing the boof yet it is too off for me, I'd like to see him about five feet further upstream taking a good stroke. & I thoroughly enjoy this image. Aggressive paddle stroke and it's at the moment of anticipation. The inclusion of trees is nice and the paddler contrasts well with the settings. Clay: B - So much color and love
the grass off the rock in focus rather than the paddler on first
shot. That hole looks bizarre.. landing in eddy. Pink boat
accents the green so nice in the Norway shot. J - like the Idaho
shot as it takes me back, brake lights on a plus but the black n white
is just .. meh.
Darin: As a pair both are interesting sets. I like the first image of B more than J's first because of the setting, and I like the second image of J more than B. I could go either way on this set. I like the Idaho driving shot from J more than either of B's images, yet it's a round of two shots, and overall B's pair wins the round. VS For some reason kayaking rarely looks good in B&W and this is no exception. I like the the paddler is in the sunlight while the rest is shade, but they are moving out of the frame and are between strokes, or ruddering. All the people downstream and on the side are distracting too. & This beautifully captures the feel of Idaho. Nice light, landscape and composition. One of my favorite lifestyle images in some time! B advances. Bracket 3
I love the scenery and light. So cool how the river appears that it's going to drop off the face of earth and into the valley around the bend. Love three paddlers in a row with similar strokes. Dislike the paddlers all over the place downstream and the rock in the foreground. I tried this as a 16:9 crop to get rid of the rock and found it more appealing. & Darin: Great light and a fantastic place. The sense of drama is lost because the paddler is through the hole, so it ends up being more about scenery. Still lots of space to move into and it makes me want to be there. Clay: A is good group shot and
nice color on the western brown water thing - good shots, no problems
‘fun’. G is where I want to be . . . has that
vert drop (is that flat lick in KY?) with a nice tuck and that smoking
tight canyon where the trees are stacked up vertically — intruque
to the drops upstream and how the trees got there - clear winner!
Darin: I like both sets here, but overall I end up being drawn to G because the two images elicit different emotion, while both from A are as Clay said, fun. Nice, but not as much depth in the pair. VS
I'm torn on this. Typically I don't like late in the moment shots, but this still has some drama because it looks like they are about to land in a painfully green pool. I also like how the ridge of water at the lip leads your eye to the paddler. & I'd rather see the paddler moving towards me in the sunlight, but at the same time this is just a nice moment where the paddler is enjoying one of the most beautiful places I've seen. G advances. Comment
